The Mitnabot: Prophetesses & Speakers in Ecstasy
This course explores the imagined world of the mitnabot ("prophetesses" or "speakers in ecstasy"), a fictional school of Israelite mystics circa 1100 BCE who cultivated ecstatic prophetic states in the service of YHVH and Asherah. By relying on biblical texts, historical research, Kabbalistic teaching and our religious imaginations, we will creatively (re)construct the politics, practices and theology of the mitnabot, and consider what their alternative Judaism might teach us today.
