About the Class
There is some Torah that cannot be found in spoken conversation, but is only found in the act of creation, in the connection to something quieter. This means that we create something to process and explore the Torah we just learned, our creation and our experience will offer a new lens through which to interpret the text.
As we study our way through Leviticus in classic Hevruta (partnered learning), you’ll be given space each week to create something that didn’t exist before, to upload it to our class gallery, and to learn from it alongside the work of your classmates and alongside Torah.
What Torah can we learn from our creations? The colors you used might teach us something new about why we think Moses acted the way he did. Who you wanted to send your voice note rant to might help us learn more about the relationships in the text. And when we all fall on the same images/ideas/colors, our gallery together might teach us how to feel like a part of a beautiful bigger whole.
This is an all levels class - any level of “art” or “torah” practice is welcome and helpful! You don’t need to prepare, or even create, just stay soft and open in this safely vulnerable space.
This class was created and built by Jay Smith! But this quarter, Liana Wertman (founder and ED of The Torah Studio) is honored to take over this class because it’s an opportunity to really experience teaching and learning right alongside her students because making (and sharing) art can be scary! So let’s do this together, and discover some beautiful Torah.
